2025 February - 'When It's Time'Alex Jones - When It's Time

My children's book 'When It's Time' has recently been published, and features wonderful illustrations by the artist and illustrator, Antony Griffiths

When it's Time
Amelia is excited and leaps out of bed early because she knows she's going to see her granddad who's always loads of fun. They do lots of great things together, like making up poems and drawing pictures, but best of all he has a boat and he often takes her sailing on the nearby reservoir, and of course he always has a sweetie or two in his pocket as well! But it seems her granddad is poorly and can't do as much as he used to. Amelia learns that sometimes you have to say goodbye forever to someone you love, and that it's okay to be sad and to cry when you need to let your feelings out. Life can be difficult and confusing; especially when you're only six and a half. But Amelia realises that remembering someone special and the happy memories you have of them can still make you smile.

For parents, carers and teachers
'When it's Time' is a shared reading book to help young children cope with the pain and reality of the loss of a relative or friend. It is a difficult, almost taboo subject, but a sad reality that will visit many of us at some time in our lives, and can involve complex thoughts and reasoning that can be difficult to express to someone of a tender age. Sensitively written, the book explores the confusing emotions a young child might feel when facing the passing of someone special to them and can be read as a poignant story of realisation, and also as a springboard for more meaningful conversations about loss and how to cope
